Scarlet Passion #2# Ferrari's famed sports prototype and competition sports cars 1962-73

by Anthony Pritchard

Ferrari is the greatest name in motor racing history, and this deeply researched and lavishly illustrated book focuses on one of the most fascinating periods of that history - the glamorous 12-year spell between 1962 and 1973 when Ferrari was the leading marque in sports car racing.

This era saw Ferrari initially dominate the Sports Prototype category, and then battle for supremacy with Ford and Porsche. After those wonderful contests came a brilliant season in which Ferrari won every race entered, and then a final, difficult year that ended with the Italian team narrowly beaten for Championship honours by the French Matra team. Since then Ferrari has concentrated all its racing efforts on Formula 1 and the grandeur of those years is unlikely to be repeated.

Anthony Pritchard, who was present at many of the races of the period, tells a compelling story, woven around evocative sports racing cars like the 4-litre 330P4, the 5-litre 512S and the 3-litre 312PB. As well as detailing the cars and the races, he also puts special emphasis on the personalities involved. During research for this book, he discussed Ferrari racing - and Ferrari politics - with many of the drivers and engineers involved with the team at the time, and as a result there are, in particular, extensive feature interviews with Ferrari chief engineer Mauro Forghieri and drivers John Surtees and Brian Redman. In addition, for the first time the full story is told of Colonel Ronnie Hoare, whose British Maranello Concessionaires team raced alongside the works cars.

More than 200 black and white photographs are supplemented by 32 pages of contemporary colour photographs, many of which have neverbeen published before. Included among these are many shots of these beautiful Ferraris racing in the United States at Daytona, Sebring and Watkins Glen. Appendices provide biographies of the key personalities in this story, together with chassis information and specifications for each model raced.
