The Most Recognizable Ferrari in the World

From Ingegnere Mauro Forghieri's foreword: I recall my first sighting of the modified Ferrari berlinetta, later nicknamed "Breadvan" by English journalists. It competed in the summer of 1962 at Brands Hatch, a superb circuit south of London, on one of these classic English days, that is persistent heavy rain. I studied this car with interest knowing that it was a development realized on Ferrari mechanicals by Neri & Bonacini for Count Volpi. It was the era when all carrozzieri felt they had to experiment with new shapes for the sake of aerodynamic evolution. The Breadvan was a car which expressed new concepts, difficult to judge and validate on track because performance is always a mix of mechanicals, aerodynamics, track conditions and driving ability. It was, in any case, an interesting car and one to assess in terms of what it could lead to, bearing in mind all the variables.

Within is a unique series of ground breaking and entertaining interviews with the Count Volpi Breadvan protagonists, drivers, owners, mechanics and restorers as well as a behind the wheel account of racing it at the 2008 Le Mans Classic to celebrate its near 50 year existence, an existence as eventful as its shape is wild. Also included are many previously unknown period and contemporary photographs.

This dedicated book has managed to bring back to life these wonderful bygone days so full of passion and genuine enthusiasm.
