Chassis 141 — The Story of the First Le Mans Bentley

by Clare Hay

This publication was originally commissioned as a pjece of private research, by the current custodian of Bentley chassjs number 141, Bentley Drivers Club member Peter Briggs. Subsequently, Peter kindly agreed to Dr Hays suggestion that it be passed to the WO Bentley Memorial Foundation for possible publication.

This is the fascinating story of how the small Bentley company, financially strapped, contrived to produce a touring car capable of taking on the best at the first twenty-four hour race at Le Mans in 1923. No less significantly, it relates the fierce conviction of the cars owner, John Duff, that the 3 Litre should be entered for this event, WO Bentleys initial dismissal of the idea notwithstanding.

Dr Hays customary meticulous research also covers the subsequent history of the car, and its re-creation in its 1923 form.
