Oiling the Cogs — Reg Bishop's role in the British motor industry's golden age

by Jim & Guy Loveridge

British motor industry is littered with such well-known, almost household, names as Sir William Lyons, Lord Nuffield, Sir Herbert Austin, Gerald Palmer and others, but for every such high profile name there are dozens of employees who toiled to make sure the products were seen and sold. Reg Bishop was one such man. Not as well known as his opposite number at Austin, Alan Hess, who he ousted once the Austin-Morris merger was complete, but nevertheless Reg was hugely well respected, had Royal connections and is, quite justifiably, perhaps the genius who masterminded the press launch of the Mini in 1959. A fascinating tale that takes in the Treaty of Versailles, the Golden inter-war years, repairing aircraft for the Royal Air Force and then assisting in the drawing together of the nationalised British motor industry of the 1970s.
